Jump into July

We are now in the throes of summer 2018. July is chock-full of wonderful programs for all ages. Rock with us all summer long with MCPL's summer read and learn program, "Libraries Rock." Here at Kensington Park, hundreds of young readers have already signed up for the program. In fact, some readers are rockin' so hard, they have already completed all 12 activities and received a number of hand-picked prizes. Don't forget, once you complete the whole program, you also become eligible for lots of fun raffles for local events, including a Baltimore Orioles baseball game.

Our newly formed Chess Club has gotten off to a great start. Please join us on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 6 PM. Practice your strategic thinking skills. July 3 is not an official club day, but boards will be available.

On Tuesday, July 10 and Thursday, July 12, we have full days of activities. First, at 10:00 AM, is Science in the Summer for grades 2 and 3. At 1:00 PM, we have Science in the Summer for grades 4-6. Through active, hands-on learning, students will explore the sun’s energy, the phases of the moon, human survival in space, and how rockets overcome Earth’s gravity.  Registration is required for these two-day events. Space is limited, register today!

Also on July 10, at  10:30 AM, is the beginning of our Grandreader program, where children in grades K-3 can practice their reading skills while school is out. Bring a book from home or select one from the library. Come every week at the same time throughout July.

Family storytime continues every Wednesday morning at 10:30 or 11:15 AM for ages 18 months to five years. Our entertaining children's librarian will share diverse stories and activities that promote and develop language skills and imagination.

The agenda for July 24 includes a program for teens featuring Google Expeditions: An Adventure Awaits You!, where you will travel on our virtual adventure to someplace exotic in the universe. Virtual reality viewers will allow us to see and learn about exciting new locations. This program is intended for teens ages 13-17 and will include a 15-20 minute virtual adventure and discussion of the specific topic and related articles and books. No registration required.

Do you know how to deal with a bully?  Panda Karate does and is coming to us on July 26 at 2:00 PM. This program uses comedy and storytelling in a fun and innovative way to teach kids how to respond to bullying without using their fists. It also looks at building self-esteem using karate.

DVD cover for the movie Coco
The ZooMobile comes to Kensington Park on July 28 at 2:00 PM.  Discover some of the amazing adaptations animals have for life in the wild. Use our challenging activities to compare those adaptations to our own abilities. Come see live animals.

And if that wasn't enough, we end the month with a family movie night featuring Coco at 6:30 PM on July 30.

We are so grateful to the Friends of the Library, Kensington Park Chapter for all their support in bringing many of these programs to the community.  Come on by. Don't miss out!
